Three militants arrested

KARACHI - The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of the Sindh police claimed to have apprehended three militants of banned outfits during raids in different parts of the city.

The arrested militants belonged to different banned militant outfits including al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) and Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP). The suspects arrested were identified as Muhammad Uzair belongs to the AQIS, Tauseef Zaheer, a commander for LeJ and Abdul Hafeez of SSP.

Their arrests were disclosed during a press conference held by CTD SSP Junaid Shaikh at his office on Friday evening. SSP said that the arrests were made on a tip-off during raids conducted at Orangi Town and Lyari localities, adding that he also claims to have recovered four kilogrammes of explosive material, three hand grenades, two pistols and 33 ammunitions.

The officer said that the accused Uzair after receiving militancy training from Afghanistan was involved in extortion activities to generate funds for the organisation and has been involved in injuring a police constable at Sea-view.

Accused Zaheer also got militancy training from Afghanistan has been involved in target killings of law enforcement agencies in Karachi.
