New police force for VVIPs protection

LAHORE - A new police force is being established in the provincial capital, dedicated only to the protection of VIPs and VVIPs especially the politicians, The Nation has learnt. The decision to set up the trained and special force came after the increased vulnerability of the politicians in the face of heightened suicide attack as the one happened the other day where a suicide bomber tried to kill ANP leader at Charsadda. The new force has been put together from the available strength of the police. The policemen selected for the new force will be given special training to counter target attacks against the politicians. A batch of police officials has completed the training at Elite Police Training School and has been given assignments in this regard. Another group of police officials is being trained at the moment. Talking to The Nation, Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Operations Chaudhry Shafiq said the city police high-ups have made especial arrangements to create this force after a wave of terrorism in the country. Giving details about the training courses, he said the training includes improvement of the skill of police officials to provide especial security cover to the venue, route and the VVIPs. About functions of the force, the SSP said it would be further divided into different categories. Each group of the trained police officials will be assigned task separately to thwart any terrorism activity during their deployment. The force will be fully skilled in gunfire and capturing the suspects at the routes, processions, public gathering and venues or counter any terrorism activity at the said points. To a query, the SSP said that new instructions received from the federal governments had been forwarded to the police force putting them alert and vigilant for the protection of politicians' life. To another query, he said that no politician has contacted the city police for extraordinary security arrangements, as the police department itself was fully aware of the ongoing security situation in the country.
