Dr Aafia's predicament

FOR all the noises raised by the US about Dr Aafia Siddiqui's links with Al-Qaeda, the indictment against her does not mention any charges of terrorism. She is now accused of attempting to kill US nationals and using and carrying a firearm. Whatever the worth of these charges, the pity is that despite US court injunctions she has not been, according to her family sources, provided the recommended treatment, despite her life-threatening condition. In the context of human rights violations, Washington has, it is universally believed, crossed all bounds. It is time for it to reflect and shift its stand, ensure humane treatment of the ailing scientist and give her a fair trial. For Islamabad, it would be worthwhile considering taking the custody of her children to meet the concern of her family, even though they are not our citizens.
