BAHAWALPUR Khadija Waran, the PPP candidate, won the by-election held in NA-184 Bahawalpur-II on Saturday. According to unofficial results, Khadija won by a big margin of over 27,000 votes, as she obtained 75,507 votes while his PML-N rival could manage 48,145 only. The seat had fallen vacant after the resignation of PPPs Amir Yar Waran who was declared ineligible by the Lahore High Court for holding a fake degree. The PPP has awarded the ticket to Khadija, his wife, while PML-Ns Mian Najeebuddin Owaisi was her main challenger. The usual festive look associated with polling in the country was missing as very few voters opted to exercise their right of franchise till 2pm after the polling started at 8am. Some of the polling stations gave a deserted look in the early hours. Out of a total of 226 polling stations, 31 were declared as very sensitive where Rangers had been deployed to main law and order. Another 63 had been listed as sensitive. Heavy contingent of Rangers and police patrolled the area throughout the day. Although the process remained peaceful but the PPP and the PML-N activists clashed at Polling Station No 69 (Hathegi) where polling was suspended for some time. Police arrested three persons in connection with the brawl.
