RAWALPINDI - Construction work on Mareer Chowk tunnel project at the busiest chowk of the town will be started on October 10 while the project will be completed till March 2013. This was told in a meeting held here in commissioner office. The meeting was chaired by Commissioner Rawalpindi Division, Imdad ullah Bosal, while it was attended by DCO, Saqib Zafar and DG RDA, Chaudhary Naseer among other.

The meeting was informed that at present one side of the road under Railway line is 33 feet wide, which will be expanded up to 65 feet. The projects estimated cost would be Rs 429 million.

A company would give PC-II of the project till Sept 20, which will further be given to the Railways and if no objection is raised on the design then construction work will be started from October 10. The meeting was further informed that so far Rs 73 million has been paid to Railways for shifting utility services from the project site while WAPDA was given Rs 24 million, PTCL received 2m in this connection.

 while Punjab government has released funds amounting to Rs 174 for the project.                          

The project would help resolve the traffic congestion problem at the busiest chowk of the town. After construction of new tunnels on the both sides of the Mareer Chowk Railway-overhead bridge, the chowk would become signal free.

With the construction of the project, a longstanding demand of the citizens would be fulfilled and they will get a sigh of relief, as crossing of Mareer Chowk especially during peak hours, is a test of nerves for the motorists.
