ISLAMABAD - Terming the completion of mandated term of the Parliament vital for democratic process, Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has stressed that only democracy con solve the problems confronting the country.

“The completion of constitutional term of the present setup is essential for democracy,” he said while addressing the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Parliamentary Party meeting on Tuesday.

“The PPP wants democracy to take roots in the country” the prime minister said. He however, added that it should not be misconstrued that PPP wanted to rule for a few more months.

Ashraf gave credit to President Asif Ali Zardari for present democratic setup, saying: “The credit for continuity of the present democratic dispensation goes to President Asif Ali Zardari.”

He said the Parliament is completing its constitutional term, which is an achievement in the face of multifaceted challenges to democracy since the PPP did not have simple majority.

The prime minister said the PPP had made great sacrifices for the cause of democracy. He said no one should have doubts about the success of democratic system in the country. He reiterated his party’s resolve to take all steps to uphold democratic norms. He sought parliamentarians’ suggestions for better governance as well as development of the country. The prime minister said that he was proud to be a PPP worker and would like to be remembered as a “worker prime minister”.

Welcoming Syed Abdul Qadir Gilani‚ Ashraf said that his election was a manifestation of the trust reposed by the masses in the PPP leadership. Federal Law Minister Farooq H Naek briefed the meeting on the legislation the government planned to introduce in the current session. He apprised the meeting of other legal and constitutional issues.
