UNITED NATIONS  - The humanitarian crisis caused by the Syria war is “grave and deteriorating,” UN leader Ban Ki-moon said Tuesday as record numbers flee the country.Ban was to make a new appeal for international funding when he and UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi appear before the UN General Assembly later Tuesday to discuss Syria, UN spokesman Martin Nesirky told reporters.Ban wants support for Brahimi’s mission to mediate in the 18-month old conflict, Nesirky said, but will also stress the growing fallout from the civil war. “The humanitarian situation is grave and deteriorating both in Syria and in neighbouring countries affected by the crisis. However, we are constrained by underfunding,” Nesirky quoted the UN secretary general as saying.A $180 million UN humanitarian appeal for Syria has only been half funded. “Governments that have generously opened their borders and accepted their responsibility to shelter those who have sought refuge urgently need support,” Ban added in the comments.
