ISLAMABAD The Government along with the leadership of all the parliamentary parties has evolved the strategy to get the 18th Amendment Bill through from both the Houses of the Parliament within this week after its tabling before both the houses on Tuesday (today). Parliamentary sources informed TheNation that the 18th Amendment Bill would be tabled before both the Houses of the Parliament on Tuesday (today) and it was agreed upon in the House Business Consultative Committee to hold debate on the amendment for three to four days. The sources further informed that all the political parties having representation in the Parliament had assured their support in getting the 18th Amendment Bill passed from both the Houses of the Parliament. After the House Business Consultative Committee meeting held under the chair of Speaker National Assembly Dr Fahmida Mirza, the schedule for tabling and passage of 18th Amendment Bill in both the Houses was approved. Pakistan Peoples Party Chief Whip Syed Khurshid Shah after the meeting informed media that the debate on the 18th Amendment Bill would continue for three to four days and it would likely get approval from both the Houses of the Parliament on Friday. The leaders of all the parliamentary parties in National Assembly and Senate assured their full cooperation in this connection and also assured their presence during the debate on this vital amendment, which would revive the spirit of 1973 Constitution. The sources in Pakistan Peoples Party informed that Chairman of the Constitutional Reforms Committee of the Parliament Mian Raza Rabbani was already in touch with the members of the committee and things were having a smooth sailing. These sources further said that though PML(N) Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif and his younger brother Chief Minister Punjab Mian Shahbaz Sharif had not attended the presidential address to the joint sitting of the Parliament but their leaders in the Parliament who had also attended the House Business Consultative Committee meeting had assured full support on part of their party in the passage of the 18th Amendment Bill from the Parliament. The sources close to the ruling coalition informed TheNation that on some issues including renaming of NWFP as Khyber-Pakhtunkhawa some parties had reservations and they had conveyed it by registering dissenting note on it in the draft of 18th Amendment but in past couple of days Senator Mian Raza Rabbani had held meetings with the leadership of these parties to convince them on these issues and according to people close to Mian Raza Rabbani he had managed to appease them and despite their reservations they would vote in favour of the 18th Amendment Bill. A senior PPP leader informed TheNation that PPP wanted the passage of the 18th Amendment with voice vote from both the Houses of the Parliament, as they believed in politics of reconciliation. He further said that PPP also wanted to get the passage of 18th Amendment bill before the Prime Ministers US visit as he wanted to go there with a credit of constitutional reforms package in his pocket.
