ISLAMABAD - Members of the Senate Standing Committee on National Harmony have stressed that people levelling false allegations in blasphemy law, should be faced the legal consequences under the country’s laws.

The members were attending Senate body meeting held here to receive briefing on the tragic incident of Badami Bagh, Lahore besides other matters. During the meeting, which was chaired by Senator Mir Muhammad Ali Rind, Badami Bagh incident, its background, including police response and government initiatives during and after the incident were discussed.

A few other cases of blasphemy were also brought under the discussion and members of the committee strongly fen to improvement a law for the abuse and misuse of blasphemy law. The committee members were informed that Joseph Colony was a small conglomeration around hundred fifty houses in Badami Bagh, Lahore where about 267 Christian families were living till March 9, 2013.

In the wake of an allegedly blasphemous statement made by one of resident of the colony, on the morning of March 9, highly incensed mob from adjoining areas set fire to the houses in the Joseph Colony and vandalized the property of all the inhabitants living here. Fortunately, residents of the colony were able to flee the area in time and their lives were saved, the committee members were apprised.
