Dip in cotton production caused Rs200b loss

Chairman of Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) Shahzad Ali Khan disclosed on Tuesday that the national economy suffered Rs200 billion losses due to severe decline in cotton production during the season 2015-16.
Speaking at a function here, he added that the country produced over five million less bales than the target as a result of which the taxes paid by the cotton sector also declined considerably. He declared that the PCGA would continue to play a vibrant role for lifting national economy. He said that the “Grow Cotton—-Protect Economy” drive was an important initiative which would play key role in lifting national economy.
Speaking on this occasion, Chief Commissioner of Regional Tax Office Multan Kh Saleem Raza Asif assured the ginners that he would make recommendations for cutting down taxes on cotton sector in upcoming Chief Commissioners’ Conference. He added that all the genuine grievances of the ginning industry would be addressed and the tax department would develop good ties with the ginners. Chief Commissioner Bahawalpur Ghazanfar Hussain declared that the ginning sector would be extended all out support and the ginners would be facilitated to do business.
CELL SET UP TO LOOK AFTER COURT CASES
The District Government has established a special legal cell to pursue the cases of different district departments currently being heard by the courts.
This was disclosed by DCO Zahid Saleem Gondal while chairing a meeting to review the situation of cases regarding district departments in courts here on Tuesday. The DCO said that expert lawyers will be appointed as legal advisors and the new cell would pursue cases in the courts to remove legal hurdles being faced by the department due to cases. He pointed out that the cases got pending due to delay in submitting replies and arguments to the courts. He added that many district departments had also received warnings from the courts due to the above mentioned practice. He declared that the in-charge of the legal cell would be sub registrar Malik Shafiq and the cell would be responsible for submitting replies before the hearing of cases.
