islamabad - A large protein-rich breakfast can help us lose weight and manage type 2 diabetes, a study has found.

Researchers say whey protein - found in milk, yogurt, cheese - is the best for keeping us feeling full and helping dieters to slim down.

Eating a breakfast with this type of protein helped people lose more weight than one containing protein from another source, such as eggs or tuna.

Starting the day whey protein - which can also be bought as a powder to be made into a smoothie - was also better for weight loss than eating a carbohydrate-rich breakfast. It also prevented dangerous spikes in blood sugar - which is important for people with type 2 diabetes - and kept these levels lower in the long term, researchers found.

Eating whey protein - found in milk, yogurt, cheese and in powdered form - can help people lose weight and manage type 2 diabetes, a study has found. Over time, high blood sugar levels can lead to heart problems, organ damage, slower wound healing, amputations and blindness.

‘A high-calorie protein breakfast, medium-sized lunch and small dinner is a proven successful strategy for weight loss in people with obesity and type 2 diabetes,’ said the study’s lead author, Dr Daniela Jakubowicz, professor of medicine at Tel Aviv University.

However, the benefits of a high protein breakfast depend on the source and quality of the protein, she added. Whey protein powder, which is a natural byproduct of milk during the cheese-making process, made people feel more full.

When compared with proteins from other sources, such as eggs, soy or tuna, it also reduced spikes in blood sugar after meals.

Professor Jakubowicz wanted to find out whether whey protein for breakfast is more effective than other types of protein for helping overweight people with type 2 diabetes lose weight and feel full.

She also hoped to ascertain which type of protein would be best for reducing spikes in blood sugar and keeping them low long term.

She and her team randomly assigned 48 overweight and obese people with type 2 diabetes who were, on average, 59 years of age, to one of three diets containing the same number of calories. For 23 months, they all ate a large breakfast, medium-sized lunch and small dinner.

However, they changed the composition of each group’s breakfast.

One group ate breakfast containing mostly whey protein such as whey protein shakes. A breakfast high in whey protein was better for weight loss than consuming protein from another source, such as eggs, soy or tuna, researchers found

The second group ate breakfast containing other proteins including eggs, soy and tuna. And the third ate breakfast high in carbohydrates or starch.

After 12 weeks, the group on whey protein lost the most weight: 7.6 kg (16.7 pounds), compared to 6.1 kg (13.4 pounds) for those eating the breakfast containing other proteins.

Those eating carbohydrates and starch for breakfast lost just and 3.1 kg (6.8 pounds).

People eating a breakfast with whey protein felt less hungry and more full throughout the day than those eating other proteins or carbohydrates first thing in the morning.

This is because whey protein ‘significantly’ suppresses the hunger hormone ghrelin, according to ProfessorJakubowicz. The group eating a breakfast with whey protein had fewer spikes in their blood sugar levels after meals when compared to the other two diets, she continued. Their glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1C) levels also decreased more than those on the other two diets.

A whey protein breakfast led to more weight loss as it ‘significantly’ suppresses the hunger hormone ghrelin

Glycosylated haemoglobin is a molecule that forms when glucose (sugar) sticks to a haemoglobin in red blood cells.

The more glucose in the blood, the more HbA1C there will be.

As these red blood cells live for 8 to 12 weeks before being replaced, testing for HbA1C can tell doctors how high blood sugar levels have been on average for this time.

ProfessorJakubowicz concluded that a why protein breakfast is the best for overweight people suffering type 2 diabetes.

She said: ‘A whey protein drink is easily prepared and provides the advantages of a high-protein breakfast on weight loss, reduction of hunger, glucose spikes and HbA1c.’
