The Newsweek of July 21 has printed a memorable quote; "Man's capacity for justice makes democracy possible but man's capacity for injustice makes democracy necessary". How true is above truism in the context of our situation in Pakistan where a court concocted by a COAS to safeguard his position holds sway while the independent judges are kept in a deposed state, their salaries being paid from Prime Ministers' special fund. Lack of justice in Pakistan is the prime cause of a weak democracy that cannot take root under the existing circumstances wherein hand picked judges of a despotic ruler hold the field. Meanwhile the so-called democratic government struggles to keep its coalition intact without any success. -DR M. YAQOOB BHATTI, Lahore Cantt., July 30.
