Extension issue

Three years extension in the service of Chief of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on July 22, this year is the most viable decision in wake of the present circumstances, while our Armed Forces are at war against terrorism. Under his command, Pakistan Army is determined to continue the operations until terrorism has been eliminated from the country. In fact, there is a general support for the decision. There is no denying the fact that in the past, some of the Army Commanders were guilty of derailing the democratic process on several occasions which resulted in adversely effecting the state institutions. But since General Ashfaq Kayani has become Chief of Army Staff, the scenario appears to have totally changed as he has proved himself to be purely a professional general, having no political and personal designs or hunger for power. Some quarters also misperceive that perhaps Gen. Kayanis service was extended due to the US pressure and for some political gains. In fact, it is only propaganda to tarnish the image of Pakistan. As already indicated, his extension was made by taking cognisance of the present adverse circumstances in connection with the war on terror and to keep continuity in the same. In this context, the whole nation was confident that the war against terrorism would be concluded successfully under the leadership of General Kayani, The nation needs his services for continuing the anti-terrorism policies. General Kayani has proved his professionalism throughout his career and had helped democracy flourish in the country. In these terms, the extension of Kayanis tenure is the decision which is in the best interest of Pakistan. LT. COL (r) KHALID SIDDIQUE, Rawalpindi, August 4.
