LAHORE Hundreds of industrial units in Sundar Industrial Estate (SIE) and Quaid-e-Azam Industrial Estate (QIE) have curtailed their production mainly because of the unscheduled power breakdowns by the Lesco authorities, causing loss of millions of rupees to the national exchequer. The manufacturers said that there was an agreement between the PIE management and the Lesco authorities to carry out a power load management of up to five hours. But now, the Lesco authorities are not fulfilling their commitments and carrying out loadshedding of at least seven hours, they blamed and added that resultantly they are forced to run their units only in one shift. Chief Executive Officer Punjab Industrial Estates Javed Iqbal expressed his concern over the long duration of power loadshedding during a meeting with the industrialists who briefed him about their problems emanating from the unscheduled electricity shutdowns. The industrialists also said that the power cuts were not only hurting the production process but also increasing unemployment, as the industries have now been restricted to only single shift rather than running their factories in three shifts a day. They said that this unprecedented loadshedding is in violation of the Lescos agreement with PIE. As a result of this aggravating situation, the manufacturers are suffering loss of millions of rupees, they added. The industrialists also informed that the exports of the country would also suffer a fresh blow due to long-hour power outages. Therefore the government should take corrective measures immediately to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to the industry of the country, they added.
