KARACHI - A political activist was gunned down in Nazimabad locality late on Saturday night, police officials said.

Fifty-three-year-old Iqbal Ghauri, son of Abdul Salam, was heading some where on a motorbike, when unidentified attackers opened fire on him.

The victim, a resident of Gulbahar area, was an active worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement. He was targeted by a bike-borne armed duo in Nazimabad No 2 late on Saturday night. His body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, and later handed over to his family.

Meanwhile, the Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) claimed to have arrested three suspects in a raid on their hideout in Nabi Bux area of Old City. The arrested culprits were found involved in the kidnapping of a woman, namely Shumaila, who also recovered during the raid.

Separately, two alleged suspects, Fayyaz and Laiq, were apprehended within the remit of the Jamshed Town Police Station after a brief encounter near Guru Mandir. According to DSP Qaiser Ali Shah, the suspects were wanted in various cases of street crime. Further investigation is in progress.

Meanwhile, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain has expressed his profound grief and sorrow on the tragic killing of Muhammad Iqbal Ghauri, a worker of unit 189 of MQM Gulbahar Sector.  He offered condolences to the bereaved family members and prayed Almighty Allah to shower his blessings on the departed soul.

 Meanwhile, the Co-ordination Committee of the MQM has also condemned the brutal murder of Ghauri and has termed it a conspiracy to undermine the peace of the city.

 It said that the terrorists were carrying out their nefarious activities in the holy month of Ramazan as well and there was no respite in demand for extortion, bloodshed, kidnapping for ransom and violence in the City.
