Los Angeles (MOL): When you become fully immersed in a television series, it can be a shock to see your favourite character in real life. And whether it’s due to clever makeup or personality-altering costumes, some stars

take on a complete physical transformation in order to grace our screens. From the bare-faced stars of prison drama Orange Is The New Black, to the unrecognisable armoured cast of HBO’s Game Of Thrones, FEMAIL reveals the ten

celebrities who look completely different from their on-screen characters.

Character: Daenerys Targaryen, Game of Thrones Sporting long ice-blonde locks, pale elfin skin and a youthful bare-faced complexion, character Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones bears almost no resemblance to raven-haired actress Emilia Clarke, 28, in real life. While character Daenerys on the HBO hit series regularly sports a host of pale Grecian-style gowns, her real-life counterpart is the opposite, in smokey eye makeup and bright, eye-catching outfits.

Character: Tiffany ‘Pennsatucky’ Doggett, Orange Is the New Black Taryn Manning’s physical transformation into inmate ‘Pennsatucky’ is certainly one of the most striking - retaining almost nothing of her usual glamorous self. To get into the role on the Netflix show, the 36-year-old actress had to don waterproof makeup on her teeth to give her the appearance of a gum-receding drug addict.

Taryn swapped her stylish ice-blonde bob for straggly, lacklustre hair extensions, and went bare-faced for the role - aside from makeup to feign injury. The actress’s usual feminine style was swapped for the unflattering khaki prisoner scrubs of Litchfield Penitentiary.

Character: Gilly, Game of Thrones Joining the HBO hit series back in 2012, British actress Hannah Murray has taken on the role of ‘wildling’, Gilly. Makeup-free and weather-beaten, the character is usually seen swathed in unflattering layers of itchy cloth and fur, hair littered with specks of snow. Sporting glossy blonde hair and feminine makeup, the actress is usually seen at premieres in a host of on-trend outfits and teetering heels.

Character: Rustin ‘Rust’ Cohle, True Detective Before Matthew McConaughey won an Oscar for 2013 drama Dallas Buyers Club, the actor made a name for himself as beefy heartthrob in films such as How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days and The Wedding Planner. In real life, the actor sports a clean-shaven look, complete with sun-kissed skin, dapper suits and a Hollywood smile. The 45-year-old actor looked a little worse for wear as he played obsessive detective, ‘Rust’.

Sporting a grey, straggly ponytail, feathery moustache, brow lines and shabby shirts, McConaughey looked nothing like his usual self. However he did win a Critics Choice Television Award for his efforts.
