Hunt wins high-diving world gold

KAZAN - Gary Hunt gave Britain their third gold medal of the world aquatic championships with victory in the men's high-diving competition on Wednesday. Hunt, who has won the last five world series events and eight of the last 10, led over all five rounds of the competition in Kazan from 27 metres. The 31-year-old won gold with 629.30 points as Jonathan Paredes of Mexico took silver with 596.45pts and Russia's Artem Silchenko earned bronze with 593.95. Hunt finally won the world title after finishing second at the Barcelona championships two years ago when he lost out to Colombia's Orlando Duque by less than a point. This was Britain's third gold medal in Kazan after Adam Peaty won the men's 100m breaststroke final on Monday and James Guy's victory in the men's 200m freestyle final on Tuesday.–AFP

Faisal to look after 2019 Asia Cup

LAHORE - The AFC on Wednesday appointed the PFF chief as member of its organizing committee for Asian Cup 2019. Asian Football Confederation (AFC) secretary AFC DATO Windsor John, in his email to PFF president Faisal Saleh Hayat, said: “We are certain that with your experience, expertise and background, your support will be greatly beneficial to the chairman when carrying out the functions and duties of the committee.” In his reply, Faisal thanked AFC president and its executive committee members for reposing trust in him and appointing him as AFC Asian Cup 2019 organising committee member. “I dedicate this honour to the betterment of football in Pakistan,” Faisal said and pledged to play an active and productive role in the holding the AFC Asian Cup 2019 in a befitting manner.–Staff Reporter

Ushna reaches quarters at Egypt ITF

LAHORE - Pakistan’s national champion and FFC sports ambassador Ushna Suhail and her German partner Anastasia Reinchen defeated Russia- Kyrgyzstan pair of Arina Umanstaya and Alina Lazarvia 6-3, 6-4 to reach quarterfinals of Women Professional Circuit ITF Tournament at Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt. In was a very well contested match as both sides held serves till 3-3.Ushna and partner broke serve to lead 4-3, held serve at 5-3 and again broke serve to clinch the first set 6-3. Long baseline, cross court rallies were exchanged all along. In the second set, Ushna and partner broke one serve at 4-4 to lead 5-4, and displaying superb net game held serve to win the set 6-4. Veteran Date-Krumm stuns young Lisicki

STANFORD - Evergreen Japanese veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm came from behind to score an upset victory over Germany's Sabine Lisicki at the Stanford WTA Tournament here Tuesday. Date-Krumm, 44, who was forced to qualify for the main draw, looked to be heading to a rapid defeat after Lisicki whizzed through the first set, winning 6-1. But the ageless Japanese favorite fought back brilliantly to clinch a second set tie-break before wrapping up the decider to seal a 1-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 triumph. Date-Krumm will now play Ajla Tomljanovic in the second round. In other first round matches, Tomljanovic beat Vitalia Diatchenko 3-6, 6-0, 6-0, Elina Svitolina downed Kateryna Bondarenko 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, Angelique Kerber thrashed Daria Gavrilova 6-1, 6-3 and Lepchenko beat Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(4).–AFP

Sports festival to mark I-Day

ISLAMABAD - The national broadcaster sports cell will organise sports competitions to mark Pakistan Independence Day celebrations. PTV Managing Director XI will take on Director's XI in a cricket match on August 11 here at National Cricket Ground while Jashan-e-Azadi Table Tennis Tournament, that has started Wednesday, will conclude on 7th at Islamabad PTV headquarters office. The event will be held among the PTV employees while men's singles and double will be played on knockout basis. The hockey match will be played between PTV and Islamabad Football Capital team at Naseer Bunda Hockey Stadium on 12th while the football match between PTV HQrs and Huma Football Club Islamabad will be on 10th at Jinnah Stadium.
