LAHORE - Police has maintained its distinction of being at the top of corruption list followed by Revenue and local government departments, while education department has slightly improved its corruption rating by coming at number five. It is not a hearsay but statement of Director General Anti-corruption Establishment Punjab Tariq Saleem Dogar who himself is a senior police officer and has joined ACE on deputation basis. He revealed this while addressing a Press conference at his office here on Friday. He said that total 9,179 inquiries were started during last six months from May 1st 2008 to November 30, 2008, out of which only 3,773 were against police, 590 against employees of Revenue, 773 Local government, 506 Irrigation and Power, 381 education, 258 C&W, 89 E&T, 98 Agricultural and 2,711 inquiries were against different department of the Punjab government. Similarly 1,597 cases were registered within this period out of which 571 against police, 491 Revenue and 111 against local government department. Director General ACE further said that after taking over the charge of his office, he has ensured that there should be no political victimisation and decisions should be taken on merit. He claimed that he has introduced an accountability system within the department and according to which Regional Directors and officers deputed at district level were asked to present their performance reports fortnightly. I have already appealed to the general public through media to put any malafide intention of my staff in my notice I will take strict action. Tariq claimed that his department was not working in traditional way wherein it was being perceived that action was being taken against lower staff only but now ACE will take action against senior officers of provincial departments also. He said t that recently ACE has started inquiry against an SP police also and it depends upon the applicants as every one who would contact ACE his application would be entertained. He said though ACE was facing shortage of staff resources but government was cooperating and facilitating this department and at the time of arrest, they have to get help of the police department, which was always very cooperative to ACE. DG said that officer once involved in the corruption would have to face at least departmental investigations no matter he got his complainant agreed to withdraw application against him.
