Expired medicines worth about Rs4 million supplied to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital of Mailsi have been recovered from a shop of scrap, with the arrest of a carter and the shopkeeper.

On the complaint of a citizen with the city police, a raid was conducted on the shop wherefrom the police recovered the medicines including 30,000 bottles of expired syrup. The arrested persons including Majid and carter Muhammad Rafiq said that they purchased the drugs from Abdul Ghaffar who is former employee at the THQ Hospital. On the other hand, Ghaffar said that he purchased these medicines as junk from ex-store keeper of the THQ Hospital, Mian Hafeez. Some a year ago, Hafeez had illegally burnt medicines worth Rs6 million outside the hospital.

Sources said that the medicines, already expired, were purchased by the medical superintendent at low prices. When the media highlighted the issue, the MS sold out the medicines to the scrap trader through Ghaffar.

Taking an action, EDU Health Dr Nasir Dilshad has formed an inquiry team consisting of four members including DO Dr Altaf Ghor, DDO Dr Ahmed Nawaz, Drug Inspector Imtiaz and pharmacist Hafiz Saqib.

Now, the EDO is not allegedly taking the issue seriously and avoiding to facing the media. However, DO Dr Altaf Gohar said that a three-member committee was investigating the issue. DDO Dr Ahmed Nawaz said that as per the last five-year record, syrup namely “Melta” had not been supplied to the hospital by the government. He also said that these medicines expired in 2011 and 2013. He added that soon the committee would bring out the facts and the persons involved would be brought to book. Within a couple of days, the matter would be resolved, he added, saying that also Vehari DCO Jawad Akram had called a meeting on the matter.

The local people including Sanaullah, Javed Iqbal, Ghayoor Aslam, Muhammad Farooq, Sadaqat Shah, Salman, Ashraf, Najmul Hassan and others appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to take a strict action against the person involved in the corruption.
