LAHORE - Yasir Khan came from behind to beat M Abid Mushtaq in a marathon singles match of the Hassan Tariq Rahim Masters Cup Tennis Tournament here at the Lahore Gymkhana Club on Thursday.

Yasir won 1-6, 7-6 (7-0), 7-6 (7-0) in two hours and 25 minutes. It was so far the longest and most exciting match of the event. Abid won the first set 6-1 and had very little trouble as Yasir failed to coup with the pace of Abid. In the second set, Abid had his chances as he broke Yasir’s sevre at three games all and then two times served for the match at 5-4 and 6-5 but on each occasion failed to hold his serve. In the tie-break, Yasir played some delightful ground strokes to win the second set 7-6.

In the third set, Yasir started strongly as he broke Abid’s serve early on and then failed to hold his serve to level the set score at two games all. Both the players held their serves till five games all, when Abid again broke Yasir’s serve to serve for the match at 6-5, however, Yasir broke back to take the set into the tie-break. In the tie-break, Yasir again took control of the match by hitting powerful ground strokes to win the set and match 7-6.

In the other men’s singles match of the day, wild card entry Faizan Khurram thrashed recently named Davis Cup team member Usman Ejaz 6-2, 6-1. Usman was no match to Faizan’s powerful ground strokes and booming serves as he failed to coup with the pace of Faizan. In the women’s singles matches of the day, Mehreen Izhar beat Alina Aftab 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) and moved to the semifinals, there she will face Khunsha Babar on Friday. While Mahin Aftab beat Esha Jawad 6-0, 6-0. In the other semi-final, Rida Khalid will face Alina Aftab. In the boy’s U-18 match of the day, M Mudasir beat Saad Zafar in tough three sets 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-0). In the boy’s U-18 semi-finals, M Mudasir will face Abdal Haider while in the other semis, Arham Attique Khan will take on Saad Zafar.

In men’s doubles matches, Yasir Khan and Jalil Khan defeated Jamil Ahmad and Imran Ahmad 6-2, 6-1 while Faizan Khurram and Khurram Nazir survived an upset as they beat Lahore Gymkhana’s pair of Imran Ali Asghar and Imran Bhatti in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.
