ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif says local government system is the basic unit of democracy.

Chairing a high-level meeting today, he said democracy cannot progress without a vibrant system of local governments. He said local government system is a nursery and training institution for new leadership.

The Prime Minister said local governments bring forward good leadership at provincial and federal levels. The meeting discussed issues relating to local government elections of mayors, deputy mayors and chairmen of District Councils in Punjab.

The meeting was attended by PML-N leaders from Punjab.
