ISLAMABAD (APP) Indian Chief Justice SH Kapadia on Saturday called on Pakistani Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. According to a press release issued here, the two dignitaries discussed many issues of mutual interest during the meeting. The CJP spent a busy day during his stay in Hyderabad Deccan. CJ Iftikhar is scheduled to deliver a keynote address on the topic of, Emerging Economies and the Rule of Law: Challenges and Opportunities. CJ Iftikhar participated in the patron chief justices meeting which was attended by the CJs of other countries of Commonwealth where many important professional issues related to the functioning of the institution of the judiciary and Commonwealth were discussed. Separately, former Indian attorney-general Soli Sohrab Jee called on CJ Iftikhar of Pakistan and discussed the issues of mutual interests. He also participated in the reception dinner held in the honour of the delegation of Commonwealth countries. CJ Iftikhar is on official visit to India to attend the 17th Commonwealth Law Conference scheduled to be inaugurated today (Sunday). Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh will inaugurate the conference as the chief guest. According to Indian press, legal luminaries from 53 countries, including the chief justices of 10 countries, will meet for five days to discuss a wide range of legal issues with emphasis on maintenance of rule of law and human rights at the biennial Commonwealth Law Conference. There will be about 60 substantive sessions in the four days on varied issues like constitutionalism and human rights, judicial independence, protection of human rights lawyers, free and fair elections, impact of globalisation on human rights, rights of religious minorities and contemporary legal topics.
