Pakistan finish sixth in Fed Cup Tennis

LAHORE - Pakistan finished sixth as Turkmenistan defeated Pakistan 2-1 in the Asia Oceania Group II Federation Cup ladies team tennis in Thailand on Saturday. Amman Asghar, Chief Coordinator PTF, told this scribe that Pakistan finished sixth in the Fed Cup out of eight countries. Pakistan team played against Turkmenistan which the team lost to 2-1. Results: Ushna Sohail beat Amean Gul 6-1, 6-1. Sarah Mahboob lost to Anastasia Prenko 6-1, 6-1. Ushna and Sarah Mahboob lost to Anastasia Prenko and Jennet Halliveva 6-2, 6-2. Amman further said that India has been relegated to group two from Group one. The Pakistan team is returning home on Sunday (today). Meanwhile, Flavia Pennetta drew double defending champions Italy level in their Fed Cup World Group I tie against Australia with a gutsy victory over the hosts' leading player Samantha Stosur on Saturday. World No.16 Pennetta maintained her edge over the world number five Stosur, winning 7-6 (7/5), 6-7 (5/7), 6-4 in over three hours to have the teams level at 1-1 after the opening day in Hobart. Jarmila Groth gave Australia the early advantage with a spirited comeback victory over world number four Francesca Schiavone, 6-7 (4/7), 6-3, 6-3. Pennetta stretched her winning record over Stosur to four matches to leave the tie balanced heading into Sunday's reverse singles and potentially decisive doubles match.
