LAHORE - Inspector General National Highways and Motorway Police (NH&MP) Khawaja Khalid Farooq has said that effective enforcement, hard work with diligence, and mass awareness through education and briefings are the tools employed by the NH&MP to achieve its objectives efficaciously. He was talking to mediamen after assuming charge as new IG NH&MP at the Camp Office, Thoker Niaz Baig, Lahore on Monday. The IG said that a comprehensive plan has been made to install scanning machines at all the entry and exit points of the motorways to stop the transportation of explosive material. He informed the journalists that the NH&MP by design was created for a 'proactive' role in a 'people-friendly' mode. "The NH&MP was providing emergency and first aid support to the motorists, besides taking action against the culprits operating on the highways." He said the NH&MP has been dispensing many social services like lost and found articles, blood donations, guidance to road users and re-unification of lost children to their parents. He reiterated that the exceptional performance of the Motorway Police was the outcome of politeness, veracity, commitment towards duty and maintenance of traffic discipline. He said professional skills, providing help and guidance to the commuters besides their counselling was the hallmark of the NH&MP. The IG said that the most damaging element that prevailed in the country was the 'VIP Culture'. But, he said, the NH&MP has ensured equal application of the law. "It has not only eliminated the VIP culture, but also instilled respect for the law among all motorists, irrespective of their status." Initially, a lot of resistance was encountered, but a polite yet firm attitude of the force has eventually won the day, he added. Khalid said that local and foreign training was the permanent feature of the NH&MP. "Personnel from APO/Head-Constable to the rank of DIG are sent abroad for training so that they are exposed to the modern techniques employed in advanced countries." So far, he said, foreign training has been arranged in UK, Germany, France, and Canada. "This has brought rich dividend in terms of their conduct and interaction with the general citizenry." The IG said the NH&MP has taken another step and started a training agency, which would enable the drivers of public sector to learn adequate driving techniques observing traffic laws. He also briefed about the safety measures adopted by the NH&MP to combat foggy season and to minimise the risks of accidents. He said that he regrets the inconvenience caused to motorists due to the closure of highways during foggy weather. But, he added, safety of road users was the top most priority of our force, which cannot be ignored at any cost. He asserted his desire to forge further closer ties and cooperation with media.
