ISLAMABAD - Smelling the rat in what many see as ‘orchestrated’ move of marching on federal capital with millions of people by Allama Tahirul Qadri, Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMP) Chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai has jumped into the fray and presented himself for any role to serve the cause of staggering democracy.

Sources aware of the development informed that PkMP Chief, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, who had boycotted the last general elections, was not at all interested in playing any role in the caretaker set-up and when Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly talked to him in this connection he politely declined to assume the office of caretaker prime minister, saying that he would prefer to contest next general elections and would prefer to be part of future Parliament.

The chapter of Mahmood Khan Achakzai’s becoming part of any caretaker set-up had been closed after his no to Leader of Opposition Ch Nisar Ali Khan who wanted him to see as the caretaker prime minister. But the recent developments on the political horizon of the country have compelled him to review his decision and on persuasion of some highly respected parliamentarians he agreed to have meetings with the political leadership in the country and in case consensus would be evolved on his personality then he would definitely go to play his role for spearheading the democratic order out of troubled waters.

Sources in Pakistan People’s Party informed that after the Allama Tahirul Qadri’s public rally in Lahore and his threat to bring millions of people to Federal Capital in case the reforms in electoral process is not made, the things have altogether changed and political stakeholders are compelled to think on different lines.

To tackle with the situation emanating from Tahirul Qadri’s ultimatum the Pakistan People’s Party leadership in a meeting held in Karachi came up with the unanimous decision that instead of some apolitical person the government would try to evolve consensus on some political personality with impeccable character and credentials to perform the job of Caretaker Prime Minister.

Sources in the PPP said that in this connection in last week or so PPP leadership had established contacts with main opposition party Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) and other political stakeholders and almost all of them had agreed to have some political personality as caretaker prime minister instead of some retired judge or bureaucrat as short-listed by Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly in consultation with even those parties which are not part of the Parliament.

Sources in the PML-N said that Mian Nawaz Sharif would not mind if Mahmood Khan Achakzai would assume the office of Caretaker Prime Minister, as it was PML-N, which had proposed his name for the slot but withdrew his name when Achakzai declined to be part of any caretaker setup.

But the recent developments on the political horizon of the country had compelled him to play his role for the cause of democracy and to save the democratic order from derailment.

It was with this mindset that during his meeting with Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on Friday he had said that if any attempt to derail the political system would be made he would turn the whole country into ‘Tehrir Square’.

Sources further said that PkMP chief would likely be meeting with the heads of other major political stakeholders in a next few weeks and after getting approval from all of them he would most likely be announced as the Caretaker Prime Minister.

The political parties, which are not part of the Parliament as most of these parties had boycotted the last general elections, including Jamaat-e-Islami, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and some of the other parties which are right now either the part of Defence of Pakistan Council would also be supporting Makhmood Khan Achakzai while he also enjoys good confidence among the nationalist parties of Sindh and Balochistan.
