Rawalpindi - A 30-year-old man yesterday tried to commit self-immolation by setting himself on fire at a commercial plaza on Murree Road.

The incident took place within the limits of Police Station New Town. Rescue 1122 moved him to the Holy Family Hospital (HFH) Burn Unit where doctors stated his condition is critical.

According to eyewitness, Kabir Ahmed, hails from Pindorian, doused himself in petrol at a corridor of the first floor of plaza and set himself alight. They said that the man ran down the stairs while flames engulfed him. The shopkeepers and onlookers called the Rescue 1122.

Ahmed Ali, a student, said that he rushed out of his room after hearing screams of the man and saw that a fire-ball was running towards the stairs. The victim was shifted to hospital for treatment.  DMS Emergency Dr Nadim said that Kabir sustained severe burn injuries and doctors were trying their level best to save his life. “He is battling for life as his body burnt all over,” he said.

Saeed Khan, owner of the furniture shop where the victim was employed, said that Kabir was seemed distress for the last three days over a domestic issue. He said that he left the shop, pumped out petrol from generator and set himself on fire at the first floor of the plaza.

A police team reached the incident place and collected Kabir’s charred shoes and pieces of clothes and started investigation.
