ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz will be holding intra-party elections in a next couple of months to fill the party’s slots at division, district and sub-district level.

Sources in the party informed that the mismanagement and indiscipline witnessed on part of the party in the recently held local bodies’ elections has compelled the party leadership to revive the party’s organisation at all levels—division, district and sub-district.

All the party’s offices at division, district and sub-district level had been dissolved by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif almost a year before the 2013 general elections and it was announced at the time of dissolution that fresh intra-party elections would be held before the next general elections. But later due to some unknown reasons these elections could not be held even now.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had himself taken notice of the defiance of large number of party leaders at local level to the decision of awarding party tickets in the local bodies which had cost party several hundred seats in these elections across Punjab and Sindh provinces, a source in the party informed.

The fissures in the party at large scale on the issue of ticket awarding was mainly attributed to the absence of any structure of the party at district and sub-district level and party has to rely mainly on the elected MNAs and MPAs from these areas.

On the orders of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, an inquiry into this indiscipline on part of party cadre was attributed to the absence of party structure and wrong decisions and favouritism done by the elected parliamentarians of the party in their respective areas which compelled the genuine party workers to defy the decision and they had proved it wrong by winning the position as independent candidate defeating the party’s ticket holders against them.

Sources close to the Prime Minister, who is also central president of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has given a go ahead signal to party’s General Secretary Iqbal Zafar Jhagra to work out a plan for holding party’s elections at all level in next couple of months.

These sources said that the Central Working Committee (CWC) of the party would be called soon to discuss the issue and to come up with a plan for holding party’s elections down to sub-district level, a party leader said.

In this connection the party will also seek elections plan from all the provincial heads of the party and there is possibility that the party elections would be held in phases or at once because it all depend on the elections plans given by the provincial chapters of the party.

The issue remained hot within the party after formation of the PML-N government at centre and some senior party leaders including the Party’s Secretary General Iqbal Zafar Jhagra had taken up the matter with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, but due to some unknown reasons these elections could not be held.

Some insiders in the party said that the ruling party Parliamentarians did not want to see the party organised at grass-root level as in case of party’s divisional and district presidents in place the area MNAs and MPAs are supposed to be answerable to these office-bearers of the party, so they usually create hindrances in holding of these elections.
