CJ takes suo moto notice

ISLAMABAD - Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has taken suo moto notice on a report that 1,300 juveniles are imprisoned in Pakistani jails. The news report further urged the Government to implement juvenile justice system in true letter and spirit to provide free legal aid to juveniles. The report disclosed that about 10,000 juveniles are under trial in different courts. It was further reported that during the last 10 years, police not only tortured them but they were also imprisoned by the courts. Furthermore, they were kept with other adult inmates and their cases were also tried in Anti-Terrorism Courts. Taking the notice, the CJ ordered that details, stage of their cases with nature of crime in which they are involved should be obtained and put up before the SC on July 15, 2010.
