KARACHI Led by Waqas Akber, a 22-member Pakistan white hockey team left here Tuesday night for Dalin (China) by Air China flight to play in the four-nation hockey tournament to be played there July 7-11. The Doha Asian Games Silver medallist and hosts China , co winner of the last Azlan Shah hockey Malaysia and Russia are other teams in the event. The tournament is being held almost 120 days before the Guangzhou (China) Asian Games which start in the middle of November. Three out of the best six teams from Asia will be playing at Dalin. They are Pakistan, China and Malaysia. Talking to The Nation hours before teams departure the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, left winger Waseem Feroz, who will be managing the team, said the coming event was an important outing for the Pakistan Whites which includes a sprinkling of senior players who he said were expected to play crucial role in the competition. Playing in Dalin would also be a good learning experience for the juniors. He said he was entering the event with the aim of winning the event. We are going there to win, he said. Pakistan Whites was a good and balanced team and was expected to do well there. First match of the event would be important because it would be against the host and Doha Asian Games silver medallist China. Overpowering China, which has emerged a new force in Asia, would be important for reaching the top of the points table to clinch the event. The next match would be against Malaysia another improved Asian team which recently declared joint winner of Azlan Shah Hockey. Russia may not be good hockey force but the team had always done better against heavy odds. They mostly rely on their superior fitness. He hoped his team would return home with top honors. He said the team management and the coaching staff had given best possible training to the players under the time available. The players had responded well to the training and were expected to do well there. The Pakistan Whites team will arrive here from Lahore and after a brief stop over in the city is due to leave here around midnight for China. The PHF has already officially declared winning the Guangzhou Asian Games was their main aim. The new Dutch coach Michel van den Heuval, who about a fortnight ago took over the reins of the national hockey team, also announced that winning Asian Games was prime task of his assignment. If Pakistan wins at Guangzhou, it will get automatic entry in 2012 London Olympics otherwise it had to play qualifying rounds. Pakistan White hockey team is: Goal keeper: Imran Butt. Former 1990 Lahore world cupper and 1992 Barcelona Olympian left winger Waseem Feroz is the manager of the team. The coaches panel that will accompany the team are: Muhammad Ikhlaq, Muhammad Shahbaz Junior and Rana Zaheer.
