Kashmir status

We have been hearing about the Kashmir Issue since 1947 and it is now about 64 years that nothing has come out of it. Throughout this period each government has been making very hopeful statements about the resolution of Kashmir problem according to the wishes of Kashmiri people and the UN resolutions. On the other hand, the Indian government has been saying that there is no Kashmir Issue and it is a part of India or in their words it is their Atoot Ang. The founding father of Pakistan Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah called Kashmir as jugular vein for Pakistan which is very true. He could foresee that the control of all the rivers flowing into Pakistan is in Kashmir and Pakistan would turn into desert if India got control of them. His apprehensions are becoming true as Indians have made a number of dams on these rivers thus denying water to Pakistans fertile lands. The Pakistani nation has never been told the actual truth about the Kashmir status in the eyes of the World or UNO. Each and every government of Pakistan has been giving false hopes to its nation regarding its solution according to the UN Resolutions of 1951. There have been numerous bilateral talks between India and Pakistan after 1951 to resolve all issues including Kashmir issue but never ever they had one point agenda of Kashmir solution. On the other hand, the Indian government does not recognise Kashmir as a problem and if at all they agree to discuss they talk of Azad Kashmir only which perhaps they want to annex. There have been secret clauses in the pacts and agreements of Pakistan government with India about which the public is ignorant. The first one was Tashkent Declaration and the second one was Simla Agreement. The public feels that the Kashmir has been sold out in Simla Agreement as after these two pacts or agreements even the UN has stopped taking interest in Kashmir issue and ask both the countries to resolve it mutually. What is the truth in the latest status of Kashmir Issue? I request the so-called democratically elected government of Mr Asif Ali Zardari to please stop befooling the nation and tell the truth on the present Kashmir status especially in the light of recent statement of Indian PM Mr Manmohan Singh that Pakistan would soon abandon its claim on Kashmir. MUHAMMAD AZAHR KHWAJA, Lahore, July 2.
