Pakistan assisted the Government of Sri Lanka in supplying high-tech military equipment to the Sri Lankan army in the civil war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. The relationship also fostered on strong mutual Sino-Pakistan and Sino-Sri Lankan relationship, as China maintained strong mutual interest in the economic and military development of Sri Lanka and Pakistan, both are also members of SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation).

Pakistan is the second largest trading partner of Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka was the first country with which Pakistan signed FTA in 2002, which came into effect in 2005. The terms of the agreement were comprehensive and granted 100% immediate concession to major Pakistani export goods such as cotton and cement and major Sri Lankan export products such as rubber and coconut products.
