LAHORE - The PPP observed 5th of July as black day to mark the military coup of 1977 against the elected government of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto who was later hanged to death in 1979.

In this connection, the PPP held seminars and meetings across the country to condemn the unconstitutional acts of military dictator Ziaul Haq . Speakers termed July 5 as the blackest day in the history of Pakistan.

In Lahore, party’s Punjab chapter organized a seminar and also held a meeting of its executive council to observe the day.

Addressing a charged gathering of PSF, PPP’s central Punjab President, Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo said that General Zia-ul- Haq toppled the elected government of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and thus inflicted the appalling injustice on the nation. The nation has been paying very heavy price since then in the form of extremism, terrorism and intolerance, he added.

He maintained that if Zia-ul- Haq had not imposed martial law in the country Pakistan would have been a developed country like Malaysia and Turkey.

He said that it was the vision of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto that Pakistan’s defense became invincible adding Pakistan had the capability of hitting any part of enemy territory with pin-drop precision in case of aggression.

He pointed out that if Pakistan had not been nuclear power then its security would have been in great danger emanating from the Eastern boarders.

He expressed his happiness over the PSF unity adding that now the students would play an active role in disseminating the message of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto in every corner of the country. The students under united PSF are better poised to become the leading team of Chairman Bilawal Bhutto, he added.

Sardar Latif Khosa in his speech said that Bhuttoism was a political philosophy for seeking redemption from the forces of exploitation and suppression. He said that after the independence, the feudal lords and capitalists hijacked the freedom of the people but Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto severed these chains of subjugation and indignity.

He congratulated the PSF for organizing such a grand function at a short notice.

Speaking on the occasion, Nadeem Afzal Chan said that Zia-ul- Haq introduced religious, political and economic terrorism in the country and the nation had been paying very heavy price since then in the shape of extremism and terrorism that had become the albatross for the country.

He warned those elements who wanted to do politics behind the powerful institutions adding that PPP would scuttle their designs thoroughly and comprehensively. He expressed his resolve to deal with planted elements within and without the party.

He advised the media not to resort to media trial of the PPP and rather should educate the people about facts not fiction based on guess work or surreal sources.

Tanvir Ashraf Kaira said that Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto gave constitution to the nation that had been serving as guarantee to the federation of Pakistan.

Meanwhile, PPP’s Executive Committee which here on Sunday paid rich tributes to the leaders and the workers who continued relentless struggle against the ferocious dictatorship. It termed the sacking of the government an attack on the federation of Pakistan.

The participants also prayed for those who lost their lives in the train accident and demanded that those who were found responsible should be awarded exemplary punishment.
