Lawyers boycott courts, reject constitutional package

KARACHI - Lawyers on Thursday boycotted court proceedings, held general body meetings and took out rally for the restoration of deposed judges and strongly rejected the constitutional package during the general body meeting at Karachi Bar Association (KBA). Proceedings could not take place at Sindh High Court, City Courts and Malir Courts due to complete boycott. A general body meeting of KBA took place at Shuhada-e-Punjab Hall City Court where President KBA Mehmood-ul-Hassan, General Secretary Naeem Qureshi, Salahuddin Gandapur and others addressed the lawyers and strongly rejected the constitutional package. Speakers said that the PPP, through constitutional package, was going to violate the Charter of Democracy which was signed between slain PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif in which Benazir mentioned clearly that no PCO judge would be given shelter of constitution in future. They said that constitutional package was being made to curb the power of president and Chief of Army Staff but on the other hand it also protected the PCO judges and to make double standards in the judiciary and provide access to military chief. They strongly opposed the accommodation of PCO judges and said that through an amendment in parliament act of judges, the number of judges in Supreme Court was being increased to accommodate the PCO judges which is a sheer violation of Charter of Democracy. They further said that establishment was using the media for its cruel aims through highlighting other matters and giving expression that increasing inflation, shortage of food, unemployment and terrorism were the products of judicial crisis but actually all the problems were the products of Musharraf's wrong policies of nine years. They said that establishment had an easy access to the print and electronic media and nowadays electronic media was trying to highlight other issues and giving less importance to judicial crisis as they had forgotten the November 3 when all the channels were scraped. "Media is the mirror of society and if it would not show the real picture of the problems than no change can be brought in the society." "Any 18th amendment in the constitution will be an amendment in already amended constitution in which Pervez Musharraf included many unconstitutional things and any further amendment provide validation to those illegal articles which are now the part of constitution," they added. Naeem Qureshi talking to The Nation told that a large number of lawyers from KBA would attend the long march. "We will leave Karachi on June 9 and as many as 150 lawyers of KBA had registered their names for long march. While lawyers from Sindh Bar, High Court Bar and Malir Bar will also participate," he added.
