LAHORE-Lawyers alongwith the political parties took out a mammoth protest rally here on Thursday, demanding immediate restoration of Nov 2 judiciary and impeachment of President General(Retd) Pervez Musharraf amid rising momentum for the Long march. They also demanded high treason trial of the President under Article 6 of the Constitution. The mood of the rally was more aggressive this time as the participants raised slogans against President Musharraf while advancing towards Punjab Assembly Chambers. The onlookers took the impression of an 'impending revolution' in the days to come. The rally started from the Aiwan-i-Adl Lahore Bar Association (LBA) while it was joined by lawyers of the Lahore High Court at the GPO Chowk as it moved upwards Chairing Cross on The Mall. According to an estimate 2,500 lawyers and activists of political parties and civil society groups including females participated in the rally carrying their respective banners and placards. The activists of Jamaat-i- Islami (JI), Khaksar Tehreek (KT), Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), Labour Party of Pakistan and ruling party Pakistan Muslim League (N) joined the rally. The presence of the activists of the Judicial Activism Panel (JAP) remained prominent in the rally especially in the shape of sloganeering against Musharraf and the PCO judges and for restoration of Nov 2 judiciary. A number of colorful flags, banners and placards could be seen in the rally against PCO judges, PPP govt and Pervez Musharraf. Some lawyers of the People Lawyers Forum, a wing of the PPP, also participated in the rally against the party line of action. Former LHCBA Secretary and representative of the PLF Shahid Mahmood Bhatti was prominent among them. LHCBA President Anwar Kamal led the rally along with LBA President Manzoor Qadir, Member Pakistan Bar Council Hamid Khan who later addressed lawyers in front of the Punjab Assembly. Addressing the rally on Faisal Chowk, Anwar Kamal and Manzoor Qadir demanded restoration of Nov 2 judiciary and removal of President Musharraf urging civil society and the general public to join hands with the lawyers. They hoped that lawyers belonging to all district and Tehsil bars will to participate in All Pakistan Lawyers Convention in Lahore on June 9 a day before the Long March. Lawyers held a sit-in in front of the Punjab Assembly and demanded immediate resignation of President Musharraf. Slogans like 'GO Musharraf GO', 'PCO judges not acceptable', 'Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry', and 'We Want freedom from dictatorship' were chanted for about an hour on The Mall. Traders showered rose petals on the lawyers when they reached Regal Chowk. A van of LHCBA distributed drinking water bottles among the participants of the rally. Traffic on The Mall and other link roads were blocked with barricades and commuters remained stranded in the traffic for 30 minutes. On Thursday, just 5 days before the much talked about Long March on June 10, the lawyers demanded restoration of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and other deposed judges who did not take oath under the Nov 3 PCO.  The rally participants in the end prayed for the success of the lawyers movement and restoration of deposed judges, establishment of rule of law and early end to rule of President Musharraf. After the rally the participants peacefully dispersed while lawyers returned back to their respective bars in small groups back on The Mall. Earlier, lawyers gathered at their respective bar associations, boycotted the proceedings of the District courts and Lahore High Court and wore black armbands. General house meetings of Lahore District Bar and Lahore High Court was also held.
