Avenfield reference: NAB prosecutor says Sharifs failed to prove income sources

National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Prosecutor Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi presented his final arguments and told the court that the Sharif family had failed to prove its sources of income.

Moreover, he informed the court that Maryam Nawaz had hidden the facts, and also the accused individuals had tried to mislead investigating agency.

Last year, National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had file three cases against the Sharif family, pertaining to the Sharif family's London properties, following the Supreme Court's ruling. Avenfield reference case is among the three filed cases by NAB against the Sharif family.

In today's hearing, Maryam Nawaz and Captain (retd) Safdar's lawyer Zafar Khan filed a one-day exemption plea for his clients. He told the court that Safdar was in Mansehra obtaining his nomination papers for the elections.

Accountability court Judge Muhammad Bashir, who was presiding over the case, approved the request.

Whereas Nawaz Sharif left the court after marking his attendance.

Earlier on Tuesday, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif submitted a plea in the accountability court stating that all the three references against the Sharif family to be heard together for final arguments.

Judge Muhammad Bashir remarked while dismissing the petition, "You may challenge this verdict in the high court."

While filing the petition, deputy defense counsel Saad Hashmi said that the National Accountability Bureau’s claims that the facts in all three references are different are 'incorrect'.

He added, "NAB brought Gulf Steel Mills, Qatari letter in all the references,” adding that the witnesses in the references are also the same.

"All three references have been formed on the basis of Panama Gate Joint Investigation Team report, which was ordered by the apex court to probe assets of the Sharif family," Saad Hashmi further added.
