MUHAMMAD HASSAN SAEED LAHORE At the end of the first round in three-day Aquafina Royal Palm Golf Championship being held at the alluring par-72 Royal Palm Golf Course, the leader in the team event is Islamabad A team who thrust their way to the top position with a first day teams aggregate score of 220. Other teams in line are Royal Palm A team at 234, Gymkhana B team at 235, Karachi DHA at 236, Multan at 237, Gymkhana A at 238 and Rawalpindi at 239. Other teams are placed far behind in terms of aggregate scores to be of any real threat to the top contenders on the remaining two days. Islamabad A players, Hamza Amin and Taimur Hassan played with remarkable composure and swung the pendulum Islamabads way to gain a significant 14 stroke advantage over the next best team, Royal Palm A. Hamza Amin, who is Taimurs son, was artful and circumspect during the first 18 holes and was seen teeing off with an iron on the par-4s and par-5s to ensure accuracy. And this strategy has paid off as his round of gross 69, 3-under par, reflects. During the first round, Hamza had birdies on holes 6,7,9,12,13,14, 18 and lapses appeared on the first three holes where he bogied the first and third and double bogied the second. As for Taimur Hassan, his round was workman like but personified three important factors that count in golf, concentration, confidence, relaxation and of course his own style. For the Royal Palm A team, Shoaib Bokhari played brilliantly and his performance certainly brought reassurance to his team members Omar Salamat and Amir Mehmood who seem determined to produce excellence during the remaining two days. In second position are Taimur Hassan and Shoaib Bokhari bracketed at par-72 and following them are Waseem Rana at 74 and Aleem Rahman at 75. Aleem showed good form and played with grit but somehow missed securing birdies and the allied advantage. Some more players in contention are Mohsin Zafar at 76 and Asfaq Lone also at 76. This is a reassuringly exciting event made more enthralling by the environment at Royal Palm Golf Course with its distinctive fairways and excellent greens. Col.
