In the political landscape of Pakistan, the reports of alleged horse-trading, bribery and manipulation of members of Provincial Assemblies for Senate votes are not new. To uphold the democratic norms, it is prerequisite to make the Senate election process fair and transparent. The premier’s endeavours to address the long-standing issues regarding Senate Election are admirable. He has set up a committee to deliberate on the measures that could be taken to ensure that the election are held completely above board. Open ballot, with show of hands is suggested. Although it is not the right time to start a process of a constitutional amendment, so close to Senate Election, yet it may mark the beginning of further steps and discussions to ensure transparency in future.
