islamabad - The National Centre for Physics (NCP) and Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy, are jointly organising the International Scientific Spring (ISS) from March 7-11, 2016.

The ISS-2016 will be directed by HR Hoorani (NCP) and J Niemela (ICTP).

Talking about the details of the event, Director General NCP Dr Hafeez Hoorani said that International Scientific Spring (ISS), which was started in 2009, has become a regular annual scientific activity of the NCP. Since 2012, AS-ICTP, Italy has become a partner of NCP for organising this scientific event in Pakistan. Now both these centres organise a several scientific activities jointly in NCP every year including the ISS and the regional activities of ICTP.

Dr Hoorani said that after the discovery of God particle (Higgs Boson) at CERN, this year’s event is more important because Dr Tiziano Camporesi, spokesperson of CMS detector of CERN, Switzerland, is attending the event and he will discuss future prospects for scientific progression with this gathering.

Prof Yifang Wang who is director of Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP), China, is also attending this event with his team. His visit to Pakistan will open a new window for Pakistani scientists and researchers to work in large future scientific projects of this region. He also added, “We have changed the name of this event from International Scientific Spring to International Scientific School to reflect the true spirit and essence of the event as this event provides a platform for the young researchers of the country to exchange the ideas.”

Over three hundred young Pakistani MPhil/PhD students, researchers, university faculty and more than 20 foreign invited speakers and participants will take part in the deliberations of ISS. The idea of holding the International Scientific Spring at NCP is to provide a platform for the local and the foreign participants to exchange scientific knowledge and to generate enthusiasm for science and discovery.

Dr Hoorani added that each year, the topics (technical activities) of International Scientific Spring are chosen keeping in view the present and future research interests of NCP, universities and national R&D institutions in Pakistan. The ISS consists of plenary and parallel sessions as well as tutorials and structured discussions relevant to various technical activities in the chosen topics. The plenary lectures contain mostly overviews of advances in the chosen areas for general audience while the lectures/talks in parallel sessions cover the recent research on the specific topics. Atomic, molecular and optical physics, condensed matter and nano sciences, particle physics & cosmology, plasma physics are main topics of ISS-2016.
