LAHORE: City police yesterday claimed to have smashed 71 gangs of criminals by arresting their 183 members during the last month.

A spokesman for the Lahore police said they also seized booty worth Rs8.9 million from their possession. During the month of February, the city police also arrested 1260 proclaimed offenders and court absconders during a special crackdown, the spokesman added.

Lahore DIG Operations Dr Haider Ashraf directed the field police officers to implement the national action plan strictly by utilizing full energies to curb crime in the city. On his directions, all divisional SPs stepped up their efforts against the criminals.

During the crackdown against illicit weapons, the police registered 362 cases against 363 accused for keeping illicit weapons. The policemen recovered four Kalashnikovs, 19 rifles, 15 guns, 304-revolvers and pistols, two carbines, five daggers and 2942 bullets from their possession.

During its campaign against the drug dealers, the police arrested 621 drug pushers and 617 cases against them. Police also seized 32-kg heroine, 181-kg charas, 590gm opium and 4478 bottles of liquor. Moreover, at least 120 cases were registered against gamblers and 452 accused persons were arrested. Police also booked another 428 violators during a special crackdown in the metropolis last month.–Staff Reporter
