Lack of quorum mars PA proceedings

LAHORE - The Punjab Assembly was adjourned on Monday until Tuesday when the quorum did not complete despite the fact the Chair kept proceedings suspended for around two hours to let the members gather to the minimum strength of 93.

With Speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal Khan, the session started 48 minutes behind the scheduled time but was interrupted only after 35 minutes when quorum was pointed out by opposition member Dr Murad Raas. At that stage the House hardly had reached second query on Revenue and Colonies, and Mines and Mineral Departments when the House was adjourned for five minutes to let the quorum complete. The chair prolonged the adjournment for further 20 minutes as the counting of the members carried out after five minutes again showed a lack of quorum. Then a 90-minute long spell of bell ringing ensued to invite the members reach the Assembly chamber from wherever they were so that quorum could complete and the House could resume proceedings with the very important items on agenda for which the national exchequer had made heavy expenses in addition to the involvement of a number of persons. But presence of the members in the House remained much below the minimum strength in the next counting. On this the chair adjourned the session till 10am next day (Tuesday) pronouncing a lack of quorum as reason.
