KARACHI - Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers & Exporters Association Chief Coordinator Jawed Bilwani has said that majority of the value-added textile export sector representatives opposed the withdrawal of exemption of 5% duty on import of cotton yarn in the meeting with the Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Textile Industry.
He stated that statistics prove that last year cotton yarn import from all over the world has declined by 17pc during Jan-Mar 2014 (10.4 million Kg) as compared to Jan-Mar 2013 (12.4 million Kg) as well as import of yarn from India declined by 8.35pc during Jan-Mar 2014 ($36.2 million) as compared to Jan-Mar 2013 ($39.5 million).
These facts clearly refute the claim of the Ministry of Textile Industry which informed the ECC that imports of cotton yarn had increased. It is therefore really surprising that no proper homework or misleading import figures have been fed to the ECC for reasons unknown.
He said, in case the Government desires to impose duty on import of cotton yarn then Government should also impose duty on export of cotton yarn under the prevailing situation to protect the vital value added textile export sector.
