MULTAN-The workers of Multan Electric Power Company (Mepco) brought out a big protest rally against proposed privatization of Wapda and its distribution companies here on Monday. The rally started from Bakhtiar Labour Hall and terminated at Maj Jahanzeb Shaheed Chowk where the participants staged a sit-in. Severe traffic jam took place around the Chowk as the protesters staged a six-hour long sit-in, causing great inconvenience to the commuters and motorists.

The rally was led by central leader of Hydro Union Khurshid Ahmed Khan, Chaudhry Ghulam Rasul, Malik Saeed and others.

The protesters shouted slogans against the government. They were also holding placards and banners inscribed with anti-privatization slogans as well as their demands.

The speakers warned the government on the occasion that power supply to entire country would be suspended if the government attempted to privatize the Wapda. They accused the government of befooling and fleecing the public, saying power tariff was being increased with regular intervals by the government. They added that despite inflated bills, the people were forced to face horrible loadshedding which was a clear proof of complete failure of the rulers. They declared that the protest drive would continue until the government dropped the idea of privatization of Wapda.

WORKSHOP ON E-PORTAL: Facilitation and Taxpayer Education Wing of FBR held a workshop on e-portal services and role responsibilities of withholding agents here at Regional Tax Office (RTO) Multan on Monday. Representatives from Multan Chamber, Tax Bar and major Tax deducting authorities attended the workshop.

Hafiz Muhammad Jamil Owaisi, Chief Commissioner RTO Multan presided over the workshop and encouraged the participants to freely and openly discuss their problems regarding the withholding tax and give their input for improvement of the withholding tax regime. Jehangir Ahmad, Commissioner (IR), M Abid Raza Bodla, Commissioner (IR), Zubair Bilal Additional Commissioner (IR) and Abid Rasool Khan, Deputy Commissioner (IR) RTO Multan, were also present at the occasion.

Deputy Commissioner IR RTO, Multan Mr Abid Rasool Khan gave a comprehensive presentation on the roles and responsibilities of Withholding Agents in the system of tax collection and highlighted and discussed the laws and provisions concerning WHT agents.

Chief Commissioner RTO Multan Hafiz Muhammad Jamil Owaisi appreciated the initiative of FATE Wing of FBR and said that these workshops should be turned into a regular feature as they provide an opportunity of first hand interaction with the taxpayers and other stakeholders.

This workshop was held as part of a series of workshops being held all over the country by FBR's FATE Wing to communicate with the taxpayers and to educate them about the various initiatives undertaken by FBR.
