I want to suggest through your paper that the age of retirement for government servants must not be allowed to exceed 60 years. If any proposal for extending the age limit to say, 63 years, is under consideration, it should be dropped. If we relaxed the present age limit, it would mean denying of employment opportunities to our youth. A large number of young men and women are passing out of our colleges and universities every year. Where would they be accommodated if the retirement age is extended. Our rulers and policymakers should seriously ponder this issue, as it will have far-reaching repercussions. Already the brain drain of our youth, especially those from the educated class, is massive. Our educated young men and women prefer going to abroad for pursuing a better future rather than staying at home. My suggestion is: retired bureaucrats and government servants should jointly establish a thinktank for guiding the government on policy issues regarding employment. -SABA GUL, Islamabad, via e-mail, November 4.
