LAHORE Dacoits gunned down a 45-year-old Senior Auditor of the Auditors General Office on offering resistance during a robbery attempt at the doorstep of his residence here in Awan Town area on Friday, police sources said. This year, no less than 48 people have been murdered as they put up resistance during armed robberies here in the Punjab Capital, according to the police record. After completing his office work, as Muhammad Saleem reached his Awan Town residence, two motorcyclists intercepted him right outside the gate. The robbers held him up at gunpoint and demanded cash and valuables. Father of four, Muhammad Saleem was a healthy man with sound body. Therefore, he offered resistance and tried to overpower the bandits. As he tried to capture one of the bandits, the other opened fire on him, Muhammad Naveed, a close relative of the deceased told this reporter, when contacted by phone. Muhammad Saleem sustained three bullets and fell on the ground while the bandits managed to escape from the scene. He was rushed to the Jinnah Hospital but died in the way. The police removed the body to the morgue for autopsy and are investigating. No case was registered till filing of this report. The 6-year-old daughter of the deceased witnessed the robbers while they shot her father dead and fled away from the scene. But the police forced the victim family to nominate someone elder from the family as eyewitness in the murder-cum-dacoity case. The police wanted some senior family member to be mentioned in the FIR as eyewitness. They want to stage a fake encounter to kill the robbers who are already in their custody to show their performance. We have refused to do this, Khurrum Shahid, nephew of the deceased who is Lecturer at the University of Lahore said, when contacted. Family members further informed that the colleague of the deceased reached their house soon after the incident and announced to observe strike at the AG Office to protest against the innocent killing. A couple of days ago, robbers gunned down a 40-year-old trader on offering residence during a daylight robbery attempt at his shop situated at Ferozepur Road, Citys leading artery in the vicinity of Icchra police. The alarming increase in the incidents of robberies and dacoity-cum-murder had exposed the police performance as the police have completely failed to ensure protection to the lives and property of the citizens. Man dies mysteriously A 35-year-old unidentified man died under mysterious circumstances in Sandha Police Station limits on Friday. Police investigators said body of the deceased, yet to be identified, was spotted by some locals in Praim Nagar near street No-3 on Friday morning. The police reached the spot and made numerous announcements in nearby mosques but none of the citizens claimed to own it. Later, police shifted the body to the City morgue for autopsy. Sources close to the investigators said from apparent condition it seemed the deceased belonged to a noble family but nothing could be established about his death.
