ISLAMABAD Veteran tennis player Hameed-ul-Haq defeated Heera Ashiq in the quarter-final 2-1 to reach the top-four stage of the Subh-e-Nau National Hard Court Tennis Championship at Pakistan Sports Complex Tennis Courts on Friday. Forty nine year old Hameed had to toil hard in the court to eliminate teenager Heera Ashiq in the three-set thriller. It will the first time in the national tennis history that someone approaching 50 will play the semi-final of the national event after a gap 21 years (the last time he reached semis was in 1989). He won first set at break point 7-5. In the second set, Heera displayed excellent game and did not allow his challenger to win a single game. In the third set, Hameed came back strongly and clinched the set 6-1. The final score-line was 7-5, 0-6 and 6-1. It is pertinent to mention here that Hameed had defeated Heera in the Subh-e-Nau National Clay Court Tennis Championships fixture around four days back. Meanwhile, Waqas Malik gave tough time to Jaleel Khan in last mens singles quarter-final. He won the first set but that was not enough to beat Jaleel Khan. Jaleel won next two sets by big margins. Top seed Aqeel Khan and Samir Iftikhar also reached the semi-finals. Both will play in semi-final on Saturday (today) at same venue. In ladies singles quarter-finals, Sara Mahboob, Ushna Sohail, Sara Mansoor and Saba Aziz continued to dominate this category. Ladies singles semi-finals will also be played on Saturday.
