PESHAWAR Peshawar and Dera Ismail Khan regions Friday secured victories on the opening day in the men volleyball events of the first Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Games being played here. To grace the occasion, Provincial Minister for Sports, Syed Aqil Shah was the chief guest. Besides others, President of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Volleyball Association Iqbal Khan, international coach and referee Khalid Waqar were also present. In his opening remarks, Syed Aqil Shah assured the players that all the positions holders would be awarded cash prizes. He said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Games is a test case for the forthcoming 31st National Games scheduled to be held in December this year in Peshawar. In the opening match, Peshawar stunned Malakand in the thrilling four games. The team of Peshawar, led by Naeem, fully utilised its energy against Malakand team. Peshawar failed to take the first game won by Malakand at see saw battle by 25-27. The set was tied at 6-6, 7-7, 9-9, 10-10, 12-12, 14-14, 15-15, 18-18, 20-20, 22-22, 24-24, and 25-25 before Malakand won the set by 25-27. Similarly, in the second game Peshawarites managed their position and got the lead right in the start. Peshawar raced up 5-0, 9-2, and 11-4 but then Malakand came back strongly and tied the tally at 11-11 through beautiful smashes of Barkat Ali, Inayatullah and Sarfaraz Khan. After 11-11, the set was also tied at 14-14, 15-15, 19-19, 22-22 and thus Peshawar got the set by 25-22. There was great battle witnessed in the third set stretched to 27-25. The set was tied more than at ten occasions. Both the teams struggled hard for a single point. In the second match, Dera Ismail Khan faced tough resistance against Kohat in the five sets battle. The score was 25-22, 23-25, 20-25, 25-19 and 15-12. Woman table tennis, Abbottabad, and Peshawar set up final showdown after recording victories against their respective rivals in the semi-finals of the team event table tennis (Women) Inter-Region Championship, part of the ongoing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Games. Peshawar defeated Dera Ismail Khan and Abbottabad beat Mardan in the round matches. Men Table Tennis, Peshawar, defeated Bannu by 3-0 while Dera Ismail Khan beat Kohat by 2-1 and Mardan outclassed Malakand by 3-0 in the opening matches of the men table tennis events being played here at Lala Rafique Sports Arena.
