Politicians take COAS statement positively

ISLAMABAD - The political leadership by and large reacted positively to the statement of Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kiyani on Monday.The ruling party described the Army Chief’s statement as ‘good’ but sought more time for party’s reaction. “It’s a good statement”, PPP spokesman and Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira said in an informal reaction.Following the same line, some other PPP leaders who sought not to be named believed it was a good statement and all the institutions should work within their constitutional domain.“It is high time that the Parliament is given its due space,” PPP central leader and Chairman of Public Accounts Committee Nadeem Afzal Chan said in a private TV channel talk show. There was a mixed reaction from the leaders of the main opposition party PML-N.According to PML-N leaders including Haneef Abbasi and Ayaaz Amir, the Army Chief should take more steps in addressing the basic issues related to the army through effective reforms to make a real modern force capable to tackle the present day challenges.However, the party’s central leader Ahsan Iqbal was more cautious in his reaction saying sensitive matters related to national security should better not be discussed in the media.He said that his party believes in rule of law and supremacy of parliament saying that every person and institution is answerable to law.He avoided commenting more on it saying that we should avoid plying these issues with media.PML-Q spokesman Kamil Ali Agha was of view that both the statements should be taken separately. “No one has responded to other in his statement,” he viewed.To a question about Army Chief statement’s, PML(Q) leader said that it was nice statement rather nice thinking as everyone should jointly work for national interest.When contacted, PTI Senior Vice President Hamid Khan said that it was a harsh statement and the army should mind its own business.“The Army Chief should not give such political statement,” he said, responding a question about Army chief’s statement, added that no institution is a scared cow and no one has immunity. To a question about the Chief Justice’s remarks, he said that in civilized societies power of pen is always important. Talking to media, MQM senior legislator Dr. Farooq Sattar said that his party would soon give its reaction on it. When contacted, MQM spokesmen Wasay Jalil also came up with the same response.When contacted, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) spokesman Liaqat Baloch commented that the incumbent government should now announce new elections as earlier as possible to avoid such misconceptions, which are erupting every passing day.He said that President Asif Ali Zardari, Chief Justice and Army Chief have given such statements in their respective domain. To a question, he said Gun is not the final solution of any problem. JUI-F spokesman Amjad Khan said that all institutions should work under its respective domains, as this policy will never lead to crisis like situation. “There might be some messages in these statements,” he added.
