Sindh govt to terminate 13,000 LG workers

KARACHI - Sindh government on Tuesday decided to terminate 13,000 employees (contractual and permanent) from the Local Government Department specifically from the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation.
The recruitments from June 30, 2012 till to date have been declared illegal.
On the other hand, police and rangers have started collecting data of lower grade employees of local government to scrutinise their alleged involvement in criminal activities.
Sources informed that city’s police department and Pakistan Rangers Sindh have send the requests letters to the chiefs of various local government departments ahead of date of employees.
The departments where requests have been sent included the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, Sindh Building Control Authority, Karachi Electric Supply Company, defunct Karachi Development Authority and others.
It has been revealed that during the course of investigation, security agencies have found the clues about the ‘criminals’ who are remain working in various departments of the local government. Sources said security forces seeking information about the people involved in target killing, collection of extortion, street crimes and other sort of criminal activities.
The security agencies have demanded to provide complete data of recruitment, promotion and attendance record of its employees. They also demanded to provide information about their political affiliation. Sources said investigators of police and rangers had also interrogated some of the employees after their detention from different locations of the city. The arrested accused are working in local government’s dispensaries, water pumping stations, district municipal offices, education offices and others.
An official of the KMC on condition of anonymity revealed that the required record of KMC employees which was given by the LEAs went missing from its Human Resources and Management department.  He further said that security forces and Anti Corruption department have asked the KMC administrator to give the record of employees’ recruitment.
KMC administrator Saqib Ahmed Soomro has directed the HRM department to provide the required record to the department concerned but the HRM department declined to obey the directives. 
Staffers of local government department are tense following the situation and consider the step a conspiracy against the citizens of the City. 
It is pertinent to mention here that a team of Anti Corruption department raided the HRM department of KMC on October 31, where it tried to seize the record of employees’ promotions and appointments over an inquiry of a case of fake employment and out-of-turn promotions of KMC’s officials.  However, the team was unable to get the record as the employees managed to destroy at least 1,000 files from the record room.
