KARACHI- Sindh High Court (SHC) has extended stay order against construction of two nuclear power plants in Karachi till November, 12.

A two-member SHC bench comprising Chief Justice Maqbool Baqir and Justice Shah Nawaz Tariq took up for hearing petitions filed by Sharmain Ubaid Chinoy and others today.

Plea has been taken in the petitions that nuclear power plant should be set up 28 kilometer away from the city. China is working on nuclear power plant which has not carried out any successful test. If any accident takes place in these plants it will pose serious risks to the city having 20 million people.  Atomic Energy Commission has also filed its report in respect of nuclear power plants project. It has been said in the report that project for construction of nuclear power plant was launched without conducing public hearing. As the matter was of sensitive nature therefore, it was started with the permission of federal government.

Federal government sought more time for filing reply in this case. The court extending stay order till November 12 adjourned the hearing of the case.
