LAHORE - Candidate for the presidential slot in the upcoming Supreme Court Bar Association elections, Asma Jahangir Tuesday expressed her commitment to protect interests of the community by rising above all other considerations. Addressing a big gathering of her supporters in the SCBA elections 2010-11, Asma said that she firmly believed that the voice of conscience should be followed by any office holder, and that politics of self-interest should be shunned. She said throughout her campaign she took the same principled stand and the recent incident had proved her true. Asma, also a renowned human rights activist, said that the Supreme Court lawyers were well familiar with her character as impartial person who always took a fair stand on issue and that she had 40 years in her back for making efforts for democracy and supremacy of the Constitution. She expressed the hope that the Bar members would remain uninfluenced by negative propaganda unleashed by her rivals adding, it was crystal clear about her that she had never held any official post nor had any political affiliations rather his life was full of struggle against establishment and she knew how to deal with the adverse propaganda. She said that her adversaries could not force her change her stand. Asma, on the occasion also thanked former president SCBA Ali Ahmad Kurd, Vice Chairman Pakistan Bar Council, Kazim Khan, Justice (retd) Tariq Mahmood, and Chairman Executive Committee PBC Nasrullah Warraich for extending their support.
